Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Charlene Smith hit a short jumper in the closing seconds of regulation to give No. 15 DePaul a hard-fought, 61-59 victory over Marquette in Conference USA play. The Blue Demons led by just one point at halftime after shooting 40 percent (12-for-30) from the floor in the first half. DePaul took a 59-55 lead in the final minute of the second half, but the Golden Eagles made consecutive field goals to tie it up. Following a timeout, Smith drove the left side of the lane and banked a shot off the glass to give the Blue Demons the win. Carolyn Kieger of Marquette missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer. Khara Smith produced 15 points and 15 rebounds and Ashley Luke had 16 points and 10 assists for DePaul (20-2, 8-1 Conference USA), which trailed by as many as eight in the second half. Jenni Dant chipped in 11 points for the Blue Demons, who have won five straight games against the Golden Eagles. Christina Quaye netted 16 points and Crystal Weaver pulled down 13 boards for Marquette (16-6, 6-3 Conference USA), which has dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season.
